Christmas in the summer

I can't believe that the calendar has just struck December and the holiday season is upon us once more. Already the twinkling lights and holiday decor are starting to lift my winter 'blahs' that often come with the shorter days and colder weather. But at heart, Christmas is still a summer holiday to me. Growing up in southern Africa, it was not uncommon to spend the afternoon swimming after opening gifts or even to have a celebratory barbecue.

This simply styled home in Australia feels just perfect for a Christmas celebration in the summer to me. Nothing overly embellished or belaboured, just a few pretty handmade details and natural materials that still make the season and celebration special and a step away from the everyday.

Buckets of fresh greenery add a wonderful burst of festive cheer, and I love the Christmas shrub in the corner, as an alternate to a conventional pine Christmas tree.

This paper star garland looks so charming simply hung above the fireplace on the stone mantle.

Simple brown paper packages tied up with a pretty ribbon and a spring of fresh herbs add beautiful festive flourish. I do love periwinkle blue as a Christmas colour - so pretty with natural tones and metallics.

A very simple branch wreath with just a few sprigs of flowers adorns the front door.

Low slung natural linen and wicker in the minimal all-white living area. And of course, fresh pink peonies make any room instantly prettier.

These deep twin sinks and the floating concrete topped vanity make the tongue-in-groove woodwork seem fresh and modern. Having the vanity floating above the floor rather than going all the way down really does make the whole room seem much more airy and spacious.

Love the high vaulted ceilings that seem to soar painted in all white.

Just that little pop of turquoise in the otherwise all neutral space brings it to life.

Love this little festive flourish in the bedroom for a bit of extra holiday cheer - and that gorgeous carved wood bed.

A proper party atmosphere outside - with strings of lights and flags alongside the pool for a lovely laid-back summer celebration.
